Just walked out of the gunroom where I was loading ammo for the next trip which happens in June. I was struck by the thought that I may have happed upon the best all around cartridge for hunting the Dark Continent. I realize that heretofore the .375 H&H has been the holder of that position with...
Have been quietly following this topic and now will chime in for what it’s worth. Having hunted ele’s 4 times and going again next year; shot and lost one with a .416 so thought my comments might be of value. I can tell you for sure it’s all about bullet placement and bullet construction not so...
Some time ago I spoke with a guy in Denham Springs, La who is a traditional craftsman. He makes dugouts when he can get the cypress logs to work with. He is very pricey but have seen his work displayed at BassPro and others outlets. Would not be genuine African but workmanship is definable old...
Lon, congrats on Mr. Spots—really nice cat!
On the elephant hunt, put the 15% ( you had referenced in earlier post ) on top of your ‘24’ price and let’s try to plan for ‘25’. I am still down from the back surgery, been 2 weeks. Obvious that anything for remainder of this year would not be...
Hi Lon, Cajun Hunter here. Have been looking for another opportunity for elephant and you have my interest. Does your permit expire this year? I am having back surgery in a couple of weeks and am not sure of being sufficiently recovered for the trip. Please tell me more about hunt specifics as...
Over the years I have seen lots of new calibers come to the table. Some of them have truly provided an improvement to the hunting community and some not. The 7mm Mauser was and is a wonderful caliber resulting from a military birth, like many developments of its time. I have owned numerous...
I have responded to this before but it just doesn’t seem to want to go away. If you don’t know whether or not to carry a knife on safari (?) You most likely shouldn’t have one. For me it’s like asking should I have ammo for my rifle. The uses for a knife are many!! I have had an occasion where...
I sometimes am completely amazed as to how some of our members answer questions posed by first-timers. I am not a John Taylor but agree with him and many other real experts that caliber and bullet construction are the only thing that maters . The brand name of the rifle is of no interest to the...
I am in Africa as I respond and am totally miserable as I didn’t pack my LB-7 which always comes with me along with a sheath knife of some sort. The folder comes in handy for removing small thorns from various body parts and on this trip would have been useful to cut a piece of moleskin for a...
Some Rugers, older ones especially will have a contact point up front. But it should provide the same pressure on each side. Otherwise accuracy will suffer.
If you are doing these site seeing activities you apparently don’t need the rest. When I go I use all time on front end hunting and then may have some leisure time before leaving.
