Very nice hunt report. Your photography and writing are excellent! I have hunted the Waterberg with Riaan and Henk and you were in good hands. I especially like your attitude towards the hunting. That it's the totality of the experience and not just the killing. I'm quite sure that you will...
I'm glad you like your suppressed Model 70 but it's not for me. I like classic guns and rifles and wouldn't think of doing that to a rifle. I know the suppressors have some positive attributes but I enjoyed learning to handle the recoil of my 416 and did not find it terribly loud while hunting...
As others have pointed out, a good first shot and quickly reload and keep shooting as long as he is upright. Plan on shooting your gun until empty. Dry fire with dummies is great for this. Always practice as if it's the real thing. NO catching brass while practicing. If you do, you'll do it...
Of you decide to use Africa Sky, they will arrange your gun permit and meet you at the airport. You can even have them meet you at the gate. Their rep will handle getting the guns checked at the police station and then they will transport you to the guest house. On arrival they will secure your...
The problem we have is that we're at the mercy of guys like this to get the paperwork done. I was a public servant for over 30 years and wouldn't of dreamed of treating the public in a disrespectful manner. Some people do not have the temperament to work with the public and they get away with...
I had a bad experience at BWI three years ago. Called ahead and when I got there was told that they had never heard of a 4457 and did not have the form. Luckily I had brought my own. No one knew what to do so finally a supervisor showed up who was pretty belligerent. He very reluctantly filled...
The good news is that the Greener bolt is properly fitted and actually engaging the rib extension. I agree with others that the gun just needs breaking in. I do close my vintage doubles gently but I am sure you won't damage a modern double by closing the gun firmly and letting the top lever...
If the rifle has sling swivels I'd say it anchors the front swivel. Swivels fastened to the bottom rib put a big strain on the rib and perhaps the gunmaker was looking to prevent a rib separation. A picture from the side would clear this up. I'm also assuming that it doesn't interfere with sighting.
Once you're with your outfitter the logistics of having the toddlers along will be easy but, it's a very long flight. The stress level will be high already because it's your first trip. Since we all seem to go back again and again, consider waiting to take the kids. Take them when they're 10 or...
High velocity shotshells are really a gimmick. The sphere shape of a pellet is terrible aerodynamically. Worse if it has the silly "belt" around it that some makers use. The drag on individual pellets increases dramatically with an increase in velocity. So much so that at longer ranges the high...
Good on you. I hunted Bushpig one evening with Riaan and did not shoot because I just couldn't see well enough to accurately place my shot. One half moon just didn't give enough light. Riaan understood but no time to try again. BTW, I shot a nice Bushbuck on that same property.
Riaan and Henk...
