First posted "I'll take 'em" gets 'em.
Zambia would be my first choice. As Phil and Bruce have mentioned, I've read the same reports on the success of leopard in Zambia. I haven't looked recently, but their pricing I don't think is far off from the top operators in Zim.
There are at least 5-6 booking agents here in the states...
You didn't mention the condition of the Model 70 your friend has, but an unmolested Pre-'64 Model 70 in 375 H&H will bring premium $$$$ (Think $3,000 and up). Unless you have the cash, or your friend gives you the 'stupid good friend deal', you might be better off looking at the latest...
Rick,
I also have a CZ 550 375 H&H. Last summer I put a VX5-HD 1-5x24 (non zero stop) on it. Used Warne QD rings. Took a sprinbok at 110 and a hartebeest at 85. Don't think I had the power above 2X.
Guess what I'm getting at, probably easier to swap out for the 1-5 as you'll still have...
Almost forgot. You'll definitely want to trim all your brass so you will have a uniform crimp.
Lyman is a good all around book to learn from also.
What bullets you planning to start with?
Wood_Duck,
To answer your original question, all the Model 70s are assembled in Portugal of mostly American parts. The same as Browning has been doing for years with their shotguns.
I wouldn't worry about going that detailed on a cartridge like a 416 RM. I'd screw the die in just enough to resize the neck and to make sure it chambers. Then seat the bullet to the cannelure (Swift A-Frame type), make sure it chambers and fits in the mag box, and crimp. On the Barnes...
I haven't read all the replies, so please forgive me if already asked, but what are the ACTUAL regulations for hunting CBL? I'm not talking the standards adopted by SAPA or PHASA. I'm talking what the GOVERNMENT has put into law. Are the standards adopted by SAPA and PHASA an enhancement to...
I don't think we'll have a full grasp on what pricing will do until show season this winter. Yes, some have already advertised for next year (2018). And in researching the pricing between 2017 vs. 2018, there has been an increase, but not much in the grand scheme.
If I had the money & time...
If you're dead set on doing a quick tour, I'd contact one of the travel agencies that specialize in hunting. Travel Express, Gracy, and Travel with Guns come to mind. They could probably set you up lickety split and also help with firearms in Joburb on arrival.
Small items like you've mentioned. Easily packable in carry on or checked luggage. There are plenty of curio shops in Joburg Airport International Terminal, but talk to the outfitter when there. He probably has local places you can go that are better.
My outfitter took me to this place in...
Phil, how much thickness you shave all depends on the brass and how concentric it is. You'll need a micrometer to measure case thickness all the way around the neck (only need to do a few cases). After this is determined, then you'll want to turn down to the smallest thickness. Maybe go...
Leupold (I have a VX5HD on my 375 H&H), Sh*t & Bend Me Over, Swarovski, and don't forget Trijicon. I would have bought one of them if I hadn't found a good deal on the Leupold.
Looks like you have scope that has a larger ocular (rear) lens? Zeiss maybe? Those too can cause interference. If you want higher clearance, take a look at Warne rings. I think their high is 0.535"
I have Warne on all my CZ's.
I need to correct myself. I looked at Pac-Nor's website and they chamber for the 400 H&H - they will also do a prefit BRNO barrel (probably short-chambered).
Anyway, they mention for a .411" groove diameter a twist of 1:16 and 8-groove barrel.
Twist rate: 1:14 (same as .416)
Barrel contour: I'd find something in .416 Rigby or .416 Remington to pattern off of.
Barrel length: 23" or 24".
Depending on how much 'meat' is on the barrel of your 375 H&H, you might be able to copy that contour and use it.
Many congrats to you and your group on a fine hunt. It's a mind opening experience for sure.
@gillettehunter - I hunted in that same part of the NW a week later. The only town of some size is Vryburg and it's nowhere near big enough for an airport. That being said, for the most part the...
With the budget you've listed, I'd be all over a recent Model 70 Safari Express. For the record, I have a CZ 550 in 375 and love it, but if the Model 70 was available at that time, probably would have bought that.
Will they let you even bring back an elephant hair bracelet? I can't remember how strict everything is regarding the smaller stuff.
One thing you might look into is having your hunt filmed. Lots of African companies offering that now and from footage I've seen, some of the best camera work...
Maybe has something to do with their accents over there??? :ROFLMAO:
Granted I was in South Africa 2 weeks ago and they thought I talked funny.
The two scientist/researchers from Oxford/Wildrcu have already refuted the claims made by the PH that it was 'ousted', etc, etc.. They've (Offord researchers) blatantly come out saying they want a 5km buffer zone and also upset about the hunting of lions in general...
Guess I'm too naive to know what that guy is really asking for. My two trips (2009, 2013) I just shook the guy's hand, said thank you very much and went on my way. Rifles made it home just fine. Pretty sure it was the same guy both times, but might have gotten a new one since...
Months of the Sun - Ian Nyschens. It's a must read. Safari Press has it on sale right now.
Kambaku! - Harry Manners - Great history of hunting Mozambique.
Horned Death - John Burger.
I have all of the Bell books. Karamojo Safari is flat out excellent.
The TSX are banded to decrease pressure and copper fouling. The ogive was also redesigned. That's the difference between it and the old Barnes-X.
Barnes bullets are designed to initiate expansion at an impact velocity of around 2,000 fps.
You can't import two rifles of the same chambering into South Africa. Since his son is under 21, it'd be a super PITA for the son to try and fill out a SAPS 520 for one of the rifles (can be done, but a real hassle).
Easier to have Dad put both rifles on his permit.
Being in the corner behind the TV it works fine. If it was on the side where the couch is at then I'd probably not like it as much. That ledge is about 37" tall.
I have a smaller split-foyer home so worked with what I had on the lower level. I did the plywood backing between the studs also.
Finished Product.
Decorated. That is a 55" TV. Angle makes everything look smaller.
I read somewhere that it was best to have USD not older than a certain issue date? For the life of me can't remember where. This was a Zim requirement BTW.
Well, I'm one of those addicts also... In August I'm heading to RSA for the 3rd time. :D
But Dan Wesson sure has some lookers. I really like the Bobtails - Commander Classic and V-Bob. The Pointman 7 in .45 ACP is nice also.

Smaller operator so you might have to leave a message and he'll get back with you. Not sure about stainless. I think any rifle you listed would be fine, but once again I would defer to Jesse. If it was me, I'd be looking for an economy grade...
You haven't mentioned it, but do you reload? If not then do the 35 Whelen. Very limited 338-06 offerings (Nosler) and expensive. You don't need to rebarrel a 30-06 to either one of those. Contact JES Reboring in Oregon to have it bored out and is a fraction of a rebarrel cost. I have a CZ...
I wear stuff I already own - Justin lace up roper boots, off color jeans (Carhartt or Dickeys), camo jacket (if needed), green sweatshirt, brown jersey gloves, etc.
Another option is go to the second hand store, get what you need. That's what my dad did on a previous trip.
One thing nice about the long international flights is that no one gives you a hard time for getting up and walking around, stretching, etc. The galley is always open for drinks, water, etc. Definitely drink plenty of water on the flight. You won't believe how quickly you can get dehydrated...
You won't need to take as much stuff as you think you do; it doesn't take long to get 50 lbs. of things in the suitcase.
Fly Delta out of KCI-ATL-JNB and book Economy Comfort/Plus. It's WORTH the extra $$$. Especially if the BIL is still as big a boy I remember. :ROFLMAO: You get him and...
Hornady 270 gr. Interlock and Reloder 15 powder will handle any plains game no problem. Used this combo on gembsok, waterbuck, impala x 2, zebra and blue wildebeest.
