Dear Fellow Forum Members ,
As part of my latest upcoming article on African Hunting Forums ... I wish to conduct a survey amongst you gentle men ( And ladies ) .

What is your favorite .30 calibre hunting cartridge ? For the purposes of my survey ... You must limit your choice to 1 . You may add the reason for your choice ... If you wish. In fact , I highly encourage it .

I am going to start with my personal favorite : The .30-06 Springfield .
My favorite factory loaded cartridge for this calibre ... Is the 220 grain Winchester Silver Tip soft point cartridge .
Why ? Because it is the original , and still as versatile today ... as it was 114 years ago .

I look forward to analyzing what the results of this survey shall yield .

Yours sincerely ,
Major Poton Khan ( Retired )

300WM for shear versatility and availability.
165-220 grain pills out to 500 yards on Elk sized game.
All day long.

Most versatile world wide - .300 Win Mag
Favorite? .300 H&H - There is no meaningful difference, but there won't be one sitting in every camp rack.

Due to the type of terrain and distances I normally hunt at, I'd have to say the 30-06. However if I hunted in more open country where long shots are more the norm, my answer might be the 300 Win Mag or a 308 Norma Mag.

.30-06. There are lots of good, and better, .30-cal cartridges but the .30-06 has enjoyed longevity and versatility where others have slowly been nudged aside. It works in bolt-actions, lever guns, and semi-autos, and it's rimless so loading a magazine is a bit easier.

(And you can have so much fun with it. Springfields, M1917s, Garands, BARs, M1919s...)

In my younger days it was a 300 Win Mag because only magnumns were cool.

Currently it's a 30-06 - or as my PH refers to it, the "Odd Six". He has one as well, btw.

My favorite is my 300 H&H in Mod 70 because it was my first real rifle given to me by my Dad and I used for a lot of years when I was younger.

But, I primarily use my 300 win now for a couple of different reasons.

300 Winchester Magnum followed oh so closely by the venerable '06

Favorite - .30-06 - 165 grain so all my ammo works in bolt guns and in my Garands

1st choice for practicality - .308Win - still a service cartridge all over the world - 20 round M1A mags, 20& 25 round AR-10 P-mags, 10 round AICS mags for bolt guns

300 H&H is the girl I love and introduce to Momma, 300 RUM is my definite side chick!

I am getting mine built, action came in last Monday and in another 10 days or so CA DOJ should release it.

Any distance, any PG rifle a .300 RUM. A 200 grain bullet pushing 3K+ fps should be sufficient for anything I care to shoot.

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
