Any gin drinkers here?

Actually, I used to drink Grappa, Greek Ouzo and Turkish Raki. All similar drinks. Preferred Grappa the best though.

I've gotten into Arak over the last few years also. The little Syrian gyro shop near me, the owner is a Maronite, introduced me to "Lion's milk."

WRT @spike.t - another libation for which I've acquired the taste is grappa and it's South American 1st cousin, pisco. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only non-Guinea in the world who enjoys the stuff.

The first time I tried pisco I thought it was a nasty joke and some paint thinner was served to me. The second time I tried pisco I was sure a paint thinner was served to me. The third time...well, I learned my lesson after the second time.

Another throwback photo of a good gin memory below. After a challenging day of sailing in high winds and choppy seas from Sesimbra to Cascais Portugal, it was nice to have my feet on solid ground and a generous sized Bombay G&T sitting in front of me. That was a nice way to wind down. I think we went back to the boat & had sardines for supper.

There are a couple distilleries near Austin, Texas turning out some decent, though certainly not spendy, Gin.

Western Son makes a nice gin that has a sort of cucumber note to it. Dripping Springs also has a decent one, mildly floral to me.

Stopped by the liquor store on the way home and picked up some of this. Absolutely amazing neat and my bride is now enjoying a G&T with some. Doesn't need lemon or lime. Crisp and clean, like a beautiful winter day.

Blue Whale is a great gun out of California.

I love Citadel it has a little bit of a citrus note. Goes great with Lillet Blanc in a version of a vesper.

Bluecoat is another favorite.

Coming from Islay where all the Scotch Whiskey is peated, does the Gin have any smokey tones?

In the Antipodes the whole boutique Distillary scene has taken off. But if you are are making a "Oaked" spirit like Whisky, Rum, Brandy, etc legally it must be aged for a minimum of 2 years before sale. This is not good for cash flow with a startup business so invariably they all have Gin. Being a white spirit it can be sold immediately after bottling. This is their cash income while the Whisky is aging. And yes my wife and I are partial to a Gin and Tonic, especially during the warmer months. Some local Gin's.

Muddle four large mint leaves in a shaker tin.
Add a four count (proper shot) of your favorite gin.
Fill half-shaker with ice, combine and shake for 15-20 seconds.
Double strain into lowball glass that's half-filled with ice.
Squeeze in half a fresh lime and stir.
Top up with tonic water, add a straw and enjoy.

Today was a really good day. And it ended even better.

Man, that's my favorite! Very underrated. Nothing better after chasing redfish in the Florida heat.

I may have to try that since I have all of the ingredients in cupboard and garden. My wife is the Gin connoisseur. I like and keep in stock The Botanist, Hendricks and Nolet's. I never have cared for Scotch. I do like a good Rye Whiskey or Bourbon though. Teeling’s Single Grain Whiskey out of Dublin is pretty good too.

Teeling Irish Whiskey - Small Batch is one of my favorites. However I do admit to playing the field when it comes to spirits...I love them all.

@BeeMaa - what is a “four count” (proper shot)? I assume your pouring while Counting 1-2-3-4 ? A mixed drink should have a minimum 1 1/2 oz pour at any Bar (when I tended Bar we free poured at least 1 1/2 oz and were known for a better then average drink ie: this was in the 1980s !! Now, I consider a 2oz pour the “minimum” and at my home 3oz to 4oz is “the Norm”. What’s your preference ?
