I have that hat too: I can tell you from personal experience that it can draw a hard stare from the Range Master, LOLAs allegedly worn by Patrick Hemingway Adams during his 2023 Water Buff hunt. (Yes, he’s Ernest’s grandson).
The message is invigorating. Embrace risk. Safety is overrated.

I’m no Hemingway but I bought that hat six months ago as motivation to shoot my buff on my recent trip. As you can see the hat did its job.As allegedly worn by Patrick Hemingway Adams during his 2023 Water Buff hunt. (Yes, he’s Ernest’s grandson).

What caliber is the Savage 99?Not elephant, but Africa: I am partial to baseball style caps myself, and so much the better if they say Africa Hunting.

Ok, so I’m quoting this old post, just to neat not too.Somewhat. The back is stiff and not floppy like the Foreign Legion caps. They do make some hat where they have a longer and less rigid neck flap.
I still prefer the original like Lefty Kreh himself is wearing in this picture. He was a big saltwater fly fisherman as well as an outdoor writer and author. You can see how the back flap is rather stiff but not as reinforced as the brim.

Same experience. Baseball cap was mostly okay, but the ears and neck took a good roasting. I bought a wider brimmed hat in Kentucky last weekend made of kangaroo. Very crushable and fits quite well. Australia Made .com or something like that. Good in the wind, too. Surprisingly.I’ve only been one time so far and I wore a baseball cap. Next time and any time I go after that I will definitely be wearing a brimmed hat of some sort.
I like the leather Brahman I think it’s a good hat.Same experience. Baseball cap was mostly okay, but the ears and neck took a good roasting. Same here, long-oval. Talk about a PITA trying to find a motorcycle helmet that fits correctly, let alone a wide-brimmed hat.Akubra Territory, but probably not made by them as they don't do long oval and that is the shape of my melon.
I'd have a custom had made hat made fitting that design.

I currently have a Filson Packer, Filson Bush Hat and a lightweight Tilley. Depending on the expected weather, one of those will be my normal day hat to keep the sun off my face, ears and neck. I use a fleece watch cap (military issue) for cold weather and a ball cap for travel.
Who made your custom hat?
