Good day, all. Joined the group yesterday. To be transparent. Located in the southern USA. To be transparent I may never get the chance to hunt in Africa however, it will always be a dream of mine. The allure of hunting rifles used for big African game has always pulled me in. I just began a project to scratch that itch. I am rebarreling a Savage 110 in 450 Marlin. It will probably not be used a lot because of ammo availability but that’s okay. I can look into 458 American or something similar down the road.

Welcome to the forum.

Members here will gladly provide a variety of suggestions on how you can realize your African safari.

You can easily start by putting $20.00 or so if your single, double that if you are married, into a seperate safari bank account, aka mad money. Just don't tell the missus, until you are ready for that: Surprise Honey! I'm taking you on a trip for: our wedding anniversary, your birthday, second honeymoon, because I love you, etc., etc..

You probably ought to wait till the plane is outside US air space before mentioning you are taking her to Africa.

Glad to help you get started.

Good day! Welcome to AH! May you live the dream someday soon!
Regards!

Yes I am married. My wife would have no issues going to Africa. We all love animals but also understand how the food chain and wildlife conservation work. Our first grand-child will arrive this coming summer. I doubt I could pull my wife away from our home base anytime soon after that.

:S Welcome:

Welcome to AH! Glad to have you here

Hello and welcome!

Welcome sir!

Hopefully in a few years you can experience Africa and the hospitality that comes with it.

Joining the AH forum already put you in the right direction.

Let me know if HTK Safaris can be of any assistance with questions or planning toward a safari in the near future.

Kind Regards
Brendan Jonker

Greetings onehappycampster,

Khomas Highland Hunting and Fishing Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

Hopefully your circumstances will change and one day you will travel to Africa.

.45 caliber rifles ya, they are addictive.
I don’t know much about the .450 Marlin but, I think it duplicates .45-70 ballistics in a short belted rimless case ( made by cutting off .458 Winchester brass ) ?
And the .458 American I never heard of.
Doesn’t mean that it’s bad in some way, just means I haven’t run across it.
A hand loader’s “wild cat” perhaps.

Speaking of .45 caliber rifles, pictured below is my .458 Lott.
It is made from what originally was a CZ .375 H& H, by rebarrelling (23 inch) plus, Model 70 type wing “safety”, Recknagel express sights, barrel band sling swivel, and the stock reinforced against splitting (glass bedded).

It weighs 11 pounds.
Even so, with 500 grainers loaded to full pressure, the recoil is “sporting” to say the least but impressively accurate, so common with .458 bore barrels.
However, with cast lead bullets, loaded to approximately half speed, it is more comfortable to plink and plunk with than a typical 12 bore shotgun with today’s serious waterfowl ammunition.

When your rifle project is complete and you’ve fired it for reliability, accuracy, etc., do post some info and a photo or two of how it all worked out.
There are many of us rifle enthusiasts within the forum.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

Your rifle is a looker!

458 American (458x2) is shortened belted magnum cases. Many belted magus cases can be used. 450 Marlin is higher pressure than 45-70. Also it has a larger belt than 458 Magnum to prevent chambering the incorrect ammo. I have sourced 5+ boxes of ammo. Hornady recently released some 325 gr ballistic tip ammo however I believe they messed up. The OAL case length for 450 Marlin is 2.080-2.100. The OAL case length for Hornady’s most recent lot number is something like 2.020”. That’s not okay in my opinion.

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
Ready for the hunt with HTK Safaris
