Mounting Scope on Rem 700 Safari 375 H&H - Questions

I just purchased a pretty nice lightly used Rem 700 Safari 375 H&H. The rifle currently has a Leupold STD Mount and rings. I am concerned that this mount/rings is not adequate for this rifle considering 6-32 screws in the base, 2 in the front and only one in the rear. The scope rings are narrow with 2 screws per ring. I am a tall person and the rear of my scope ocular normally falls at the rear of the tang on a Rem 700. The mount that is on the rifle would allow correct scope position with the S&B 3-12 X 50 Klassik Scope I would like to use. Most mounts other than picatinny rails would not allow the scope to be mounted far enough forward for me. IMO a picatinny just does not go with the rifle however they are very functional. Looking to some of you gents on the Forum that might help me with sound advice. Thanks in Advance.

Need a photo of the rifle receiver without the bases. All 700s I've owned had four base screws and some were 6-48 and others 8-40. Never saw one with 6-32s.
I use the Burris Signature with pic rail but in keeping with you wishes, the Talley may be more suitable.

I have a rem 700 375 w standard leupold mounts that has been on close to 20 international trips taking hundreds of animals.

That scope hasn’t moved at all since 1994 or so.

You should be fine. If you are really worried you count probably have the holes drilled and taped for 8-40.

I can drill and tap the holes to 8-40. I mistyped, yes 6-48 is standard, never seen a stock Rem 700 other than that. I have done many over the years where I am rebarreling the rifle and have the bare action in hand. The one hole in the rear of the STD mount bothers me and I just found a statement from Leupold that says they do not recommend the STD mount for 300 Magnum and above. The rear ring needs to set in front of the rear mounting holes in the action so the Talley and like is a no go. Sureshot375 is doing OK with the STD Leupold mount on a 375 so maybe I give it a try. The S&B scope I am mounting is pretty heavy.

Agree on the strong part. Just hope the receiver holes are drilled somewhere in alignment with the bore. If off too far, the scope may run out of windage adjustment. BTDT.

All in all, about this video, its not Mauser 98 nor Winchester m70, but this is as good as it gets on Remington 700 in 375 H&H.

Yes, that system is about as strong as can be made. I use dual dovetails on most all my hunting rifles. Poke around for a 1" bar to use when setting the rings. Easier alignment and prevents bind on the scope when tightening rings to scope body. The only way there could be bore alignment problem is if the mounting holes in the receiver are D&Td off axis to the bore line. A good, smooth 1" bar can also be used to lap the rings to perfect alignment using 220 or so grit lapping compound. Wheeler makes a lapping kit and bar for such. But I've also made them for same purpose out of 1x12" stock with a 3/8" bolt welded in the center of the bar.

If worried about the ability of screws to hold the bases tight just glue the mounts to the rifle as well as using the screws. Have seen this done and it works.

I have a M700 in 375H&H and just use the factory screws and never had a problem with it and I have tried the odd hot load during load development.

Please use a quality torque wrench and verify the proper value for the screw size and thread pitch. It can mean the difference in a solid mount vs stripped/buggered threads.

As a (semi) retired gunsmith, I can totally agree with this! And not with just scope base and ring screws. I've had to replace, rethread, re tap, re drill, all sorts of screws because they were: overtightened, cross threaded, screw heads twisted or broken off, screw heads buggered up, wrong screw length, or wrong screw thread.

He will open up those holes to 8-40 TPI threads for $50.

Also check out his M-16 style extractor for REM 700’s

And yes, d&t to #8 may not be necessary but it adds peace of mind and insurance. Take care as some receivers are very hard and taps can break..... with accompanying utterance and thought of "oh no" . Don't ask me how I know.

When mounting any scope it pays to make sure of perfect alignment of any type rings. This kit by Wheeler helps insure that alignment. Also, lapping the rings won't hurt. Taking caring during mounting process also helps prevent both scope damage and scope slippage under recoil.
