Anyone here use Red Dune Taxidermy in South Africa? The folks I am hunting with recommend them, but I cannot find much reference to them on the Internet. Any info would be appreciated.

Looked at their web page and if you have to pay 100% up front for dip and ship work how do they even know what it is going to be UP FRONT?

I haven't heard of them, but recommend doing your own research for a taxidermist, whether you chose to do it in SA or at home. The same would go for dip and pack.

Taxidermy quality varies wildly and I've seen and read too many horror stories that started out with an outfitter recommendation and zero research by the client.

Welcome to the forum!

I know that the taxidermist that I used in South Africa had his prices listed when we arrived at his shop. But they didn't handle shipping but only crating for shipping which was 15% of the dip and pack cost.

Then the shipping was on you through your importer.

I have done research on them. Trust me...I have found one gentlemen online in another forum that has made three trips to Africa hunting and he used them on his second hunt and said they did exemplary work. I have also seen one shoulder mount on here that was done and it was a springbok. Hard to tell much detail about it.

I was hoping there would be someone else on here that had heard abut them or used them at some point. I have quotes from them and he is comparable to others in regards to prices. I guess I'll see for myself when I get there, I just hate to wait until I'm there at the shop to decide. I feel like if I tour the shop and decide not to use them for my taxidermy and ony use them for dip and ship that the price my be inflated because they would be insulted I didn't want to use them. Then again they may do excellent work. Hard to say I guess.

Where in South Africa will you be hunting? You do not have to use who the outfitter recommends. There are good ones and shoddy ones so you are wise to do your research in advance.

I have used them twice. I have had no problems with them, and the work is good. I can post some pics of my trophies later if you want!?

I used them on my first trip to SA in 2011, and I would say the work is average. The communication is fine, the turnaround time is fine, but now that I look at my mounts versus the mounts my taxidermist does for me here, the next trip to Africa I will be bringing all my stuff back home.

CAustin - I will be hunting in Fauresmith in Free State.

Swedhunter - Any pictures you could post would be absolutely great. I would appreciate it greatly.

reedy - could you psot some pictures as well?

Don't know them! where are they situated? perhaps I am looking at the wrong place, but don't see their contact details...

@Bushwack

If its the same one I used they are in Jacobsdal

Hi Ezgoin

The problems I had with SA Taxidermy on my first safari I would suggest that you find a good place in the states. I had my last trophies done state side and I couldn't be more happy with Dennis's (The Artistry of Wildlife) work. He suggested using Dip and Pack company Trophy Solutions Africa (http://www.trophy-care.com). The company that my safari company used ended up taking 9 months to get my dip and ship back to the states and they blamed it on the fact that I had one hide tanned there, what a mistake. I didn't have to pay up front and it still took that long.

Bhfs300 - How exaclty does one get their hides and horns to the place that you mentioned since it is oer 8 hours away from where I am hunting? Sorry if this make sense to you guys but I'm new to this whole thing and I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Hi

You might go to their web site and check. I think depending how many trophies you will end up with determine if they will pick them up for free. Eight hours sounds like a long ways but you could contact them and see how often they go that dirrection if at all. They are saposto have a great turn around time?

Who does your safari operator recommend? They will usually drop off your salted hides to them. It would be easier to find this out and then ask if anyone knows anything about them.

I think that is the name of the thread.
But some of the things that they do in charging and a couple of the people that have used them have said maybe we should look for an option of another company.

Thanks for all the input and answers gentlemen. I have the info I need. I got some good feedback on Red Dune's dip and pack from a fellow AH member. That same member went hunting with the outfitter I am going with. I'm going to use them to dip and ship my items back here to the US so I can use my preferred Taxidermist. He said they did an excellent job on the dip and ship for his items.

Glad we could help, and its good to know your taxidermy plan before going over !

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
