Hi. I am new to forum and am appreciative of all input. I am looking for offers for a sable/roan combo hunt. I would like 48 inch plus sable and 30 inch roan. I am trying to keep shipping and taxidermy cost down for my first trip.

Not interested in small fenced areas.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum and quite an introductory request….

More on your history, hunting experiences, especially in Africa etc would be helpful to become a contributing member. Sharing any hunt reports, stories and pictures are always welcome.

As to your request seems odd to be so demanding on exceptional trophy quality, while also wanting free range AND keeping costs down…..

Not really adding up so please tell what you do know about Africa hunting? And also what’s your Budget? Since that will be a huge determinant in chance of success.

I guess I dont understand.
I've read about small fenced areas where game is bought to be hunted.
As it is my first hunt I would rather spend more money on trophy fees that are the animals that are and will be most wanted.
I guess I could do a first timer package but will end up doing this anyway. May be I won't spend as much money on Taxidermy later on first timer hunts.

Lots to unpack here-

Where are you from? What have you hunted? How old (approximately if you want) are you?

Give us some history so we know where you are coming from?

Your request for a 48” sable and 30” roan “not in a small fenced” area is a bit ambiguous?

Please clarify- are you willing to hunt High Fence, but not a put and take operation? Or are you implying completely wild and free range?

if you are From the US, Requesting those size animals is like saying I want to come shoot a 200” whitetail deer not in a fenced area, but I want to do it for cheap- Not going to happen!

Your budget - please give an approximate amount in USD will be helpful for forum members to help align realistic expectations and getting you the best value for a first trip. There is no first class ticket for economy prices

All top end animals, especially on private properties, generally carry their own separate trophy fees above and beyond the “average” or listed price for said species.

:S Welcome: to AH

48” Sable, those are not easy found, except farmed ones and that you will pay for that privilege. Spike might have one on his place, but I don’t think he has Roan. I shot a 44” sable at Spikes place and that a great sable.

Who’s gonna tell him, lol
I think many may be trying to figure out if you are being serious
Hey guys…I’d like a 450inch Elk and a 206” Typical Whitetail…
That’s basically what you said just FYI
You can certainly go to many places in South Africa and Shoot both…
But lower you expectations probably
Say 42 and 28 maybe

I want big ones but need to save money on freight….that is the same as “ take a left right here” or a dog named Stay….

Ain't no small fence areas in Africa. Stateside exotic ranches, yeah, if you think 6000 acres are small areas, but I get your point. It's no fun shooting real animals like a carnival shooting gallery.

There are 100% small fence areas in Africa. There are outfitters who will let you hunt their breeding pens, and other outfitters conducting hunts one 500-1000ac ranches.

I forgot about the breeding pens.......those are the exception

Welcome to AH

You’ve inquired about some exceptionally large sized trophies. You will pay much higher than the current going rates on trophy fees for animals of this caliber and you will likely be hunting smaller fenced properties since animals like this are most likely breeding stock but you might get lucky.

If you’re from the states, to put it into perspective a 40” Sable is the equivalent of a Boone and Crockett Whitetail or Elk. You’re asking for something 20% larger than the that and have stipulations.

I’ve seen a couple of 5-8k ranches that are sub fenced or divided by roads creating smaller 500-2000ac hunting areas whereas some of the breeding pens are under 20ac

First of all, welcome to AH! This is a great site where you can feed your interest in African hunting and learn a lot.

Now, as has been alluded to by others before now, you’re asking for some very rare quality animals, especially if you want to hunt free range areas. There are fenced South African ranches where you’ll have a realistic chance at t animals of the size you mention, but 30” Roan and 48” Sable are simply the extreme upper end for their respective species and you’ll pay plenty to shoot them. If you seek these on free range areas, even more rare -by a long way.

You say it’ll be your first African hunt. In my opinion (which nobody has asked for) you’d be better served to go hunt for older age class animals and be damned happy with whatever you end up with, regardless whether it’s 48” or 42”, 30” or 26”. 42” sable and 26” roan are damn fine examples so I think you’ll be happier enjoying a good hunt for a quality animal than getting hung up on size for the first hunt you’ll be making on the continent.

I saw wild roan in Caprivi. And many roan and sable in the fence
Generally roan and sable are most valuable premium plains game. As a general rule, they will always be kept in a fence on a game management farm. Nobody is releasing them in the wild. They are valuable,
So, if you are happy with hunting in high fence, place to look is South Africa, and Namibia.

If you want wild roan and sable, no fences and free roaming: you look in Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe.
But daily rates and hunt costs will be much higher.

I can recommend an outfitter in Namibia with 5000 hectares fence (12.300 Acres), if you drop me a PM.

Roan and sable are true fine trophies.
But experience of a hunt on a farm is different story.
For example, hunting a common duiker could be much more challenging and cheaper then hunting sable or roan in same place.

Bottom line is: I am not sure, is it worthy to chase top plains game trophies on a first safari, if this is your first safari?

I have hunted most of common plains game species in Namibia, plus I made one DG hunt in wilderness (Buffalo in Caprivi).
And I am still not ready to pay the trophy fee price for Sable and Roan in the fence.

I told my outfitter once if there is a sable and roan, old specimen, with broken horn or both broken horns, on very discounted price I will hunt them. No other way for me. With prices of roan and sable in the fence (which is one hunt, 7 days) I could get at least two PG safaris with more trophies of less expensive animals, and making hunts more challenging (and most likely I will go this route).

When comparing South Africa and Namibia, sable and roan fenced are generally cheaper in South Africa. But fences are in average larger in Namibia (not the rule, but in general)
Looking in this problem, and based on your inquiry, first question must be: how large is the property, and what is the trophy fee?

And consider broken horn discount, as well.
Before that you must be clear with yourself, what is the smallest size of fence you will accept. (this you did not clarify in first post)

Hi not a chance in big open unfenced areas....or in most places..simple fact....for your shopping list you need to go to a place in SA that can offer you the exact size you want....they will know as the animals will have been darted and measured..... a 48 inch plus sable.....mmmmm.....as said SA ..probably an old breeding male that is surplus to requirements...

I knew spike was the sable expert and would have some solid advice, and could offer some other first time experiences.
Figured he would have some info on a good place to find an old roan

I don’t think you can find both Roan and Sable Free Range in any of the above. Zim gets what 2 Roan tags now a year and only in the last few years? Definitely not Moz nor Botswana to my knowledge
Only place is Zambia and Western Tanzania
And…I might venture that no hunter maybe in recorded history has taken both of this size in a single safari or maybe ever period.
His destination is South Africa with lowered expectations (or a huge budget to shoot breeders)
One can shoot Damn fine specimens there in the low/mid 40s and mid/high 20s easily and on a reasonable budget

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
