SOUTH AFRICA: Hunting The Far North With Stanley Pieterse Safaris

With Ross & Pete out looking for kudu, Stanley suggested we head to a different area up near the Zim border for waterbuck. This was a beautiful hilly area with interesting rock formations and caves where the Bushmen once lived. Water here was a large lake, maybe 1/4 mile across. We sat and watched game come to water, lots of baboons and impala, zebras and kudu, but no waterbuck.

We decided to head back for lunch and, of course, spotted a bull standing back in the trees.

We then took a hike up to the Bushmen caves, where you can still see cave paintings.

nice report
i know Stanley pieterse, not too far from me
great guy and a good operator

Ross got his kudu bull, so we joined up again and went looking for nyala. We spotted one right away, and Pete and I started stalking. I thought I had a pretty good shot at him from about 50 yards, but Pete wanted to get closer. We actually stalked away from him, which I thought was curious, and Pete told me to set the scope at 1X. My scope is almost always at 1X during the stalk, so I was good. We were crawling through some really thick bush, Pete in the lead, then me, then Ross. I was thinking I should have shot him earlier when I sensed Ross stop. Pete eased back and nodded to my left. I was up against a super dense bush, stepped around it, and the bull stepped out maybe 15-20 feet in front of me. I think we saw each other at the same time. I snapped up the rifle, saw the dot on his shoulder and fired as he sprang forward.

Our last morning, driving around looking at impala. There are so many of them here, we didn’t always notice them. But a nice ram popped up in front of me and I took him.

What a trip! In 10 hunting days, we took 14 animals, 7 each. We agreed this was the hunting trip of our lives, so far. Part of this was hunting buffalo which is certainly a peak hunting experience. Part of it was the excitement of coming to Africa, especially during this time. But we agreed that it was largely due to the guys, Stanley and Pete, and Stanley’s wife, Seugnét. There is no doubt that PH’s closely watch new clients, assessing rifle handling, muzzle discipline, awareness. But experienced clients also assess the PH’s. You want competent, you want friendly, you expect the guys will work hard for you. But you don’t necessarily expect to be treated like family. We came to trust these guys, and we will miss them. Trip of a lifetime.

I just got back from hunting with Stanley this weekend and agree that they run a top notch operation. Jessica, the Jack Russell, is still trying to get the Mongooses under the porch!

Congratulations on a very successful Safari. Thanks for the report and pictures, enjoyed.

This was a proper hunt in a beautiful area. Well done!

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...
Behind the scenes of taking that perfect picture.....

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
