This was my best hunt ever, top notch outfitter and superb PH, Gene Hill.
After a long dry spell the area recently received buckets of rain. The grass was tall and the bush was thick. It was awesome hunting, thrilling and very different for me. The hunting areas were huge and there were hundreds of buffalo.
The buffalo herds did not have to leave the thick lush bush for water as usual, and in that thick stuff they could be aggressive. The 10 day hunt included a couple of charges on the PH and Tracker, thankfully the PH had me tucked out of harms way when things looked tricky and nobody got hurt. Thrilling!
Gene is a young PH with tons of DG experience. He always had a smart strategy, that encompassed my old age, for every situation. I was very fortunate to hunt with him, Africa Maximus Safaris is a great place to hunt. Brian

Congratulations on the exciting and successful hunt.

Please do share pictures and details on the 577 NE

Thanks, Yes I am 80 yrs old and I sure felt like it too, staggering around in that deep wet grass knowing that there could be a rank old buffalo cow behind ever bush. I had no idea what I was getting into when I first booked the hunt. I am very thankful that young Gene Hill was the PH.
It was a thriller! I have a video of me killing a 22 year old cow that was charging the hunting truck. I hit her in the chest and she dropped right there and disappeared in the tall grass.

Old, hell you're not old.

I too would like to hear more. The 577 is intriguing. I very much appreciate info on the rifle and the Peregrine bullets used. I used Peregrine's on my last hunt and thought they were superb. I was shooting a lowly 500 however.

Congratulations

Congrats Brian! I would love to hear more about your hunt and the performance of the 577NE.

HH
Peregrine Bushmaster bullets 700 grains. 50-80 yds. All broadside pass through except one facing chest shot that stopped under the tail.

I messed up the first buffalo cow, bit too far back she went into the thick stuff about 20 yds and Gene killed her after being chased by a young bull. ( he and the tracker came scurrying out of the bush like pair of church mice, Gene was giggling.)

I hit one cow hard in the chest, she dropped right there and as we were approaching her she stood up so I hit again and she dropped in the same place and stayed down.
The other 4 cows were one shot each, no tracking needed. Brian

"Low;y 500" is perfect for buffalo. I built the .577 for the Wow factor but it is way over the top.
Peregrine bullets are excellent. They need 2000 fps plus for good expansion. I shoot them too slow for good expansion but that is the way I like it.

My rifle is a converted ( barrel stub job) H&R 10 ga. single shot, 26.5 inch barrel. 13.5 lbs.

Thanks for your comments, and thanks to all for the same!. Brian

A single shot! There's a confidence builder. Who made the rifle? Did you use the scope or red dot?

A single shot focuses the mind alright.

I used the Holosun green dot and the rifle in the ugly camo configuration. ( the nice looking one is the same rifle but I like the camo dress for hunting. ( I can't use the scope because the Amsterdam airport took it on way to Africa.)

An America, Ed Hubbel, diseased, did the stub barrel job. I did the stock work.

Thanks for your post, Brian

The Amsterdam airport took your scope away from you but let the gun go through? Was the scope in a carry on? Are there plans for them to return the scope to you in the future?

Congratulations on an amazing hunt!

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
